Every October, Breast Cancer Awareness Month brings renewed attention to screening, early detection, treatment, and support for people affected by breast cancer.
Nurses are involved at nearly every step of that journey—from education and screening through treatment, recovery, survivorship, and end-of-life care.
Education and Early Detection
Nurses help patients understand risk factors, screening recommendations, follow-up care, and when a change should be discussed with a healthcare professional. Clear education can help people feel more confident about taking the next step in their care.
Support During Treatment
For patients going through surgery, chemotherapy, radiation, or other treatments, nurses often become a familiar and trusted presence. They monitor symptoms, help manage side effects, answer questions, and provide emotional support when things feel overwhelming.
Advocacy Matters
Nurses also advocate for patients by helping them communicate concerns, understand choices, and get connected with additional resources when needed.
Breast Cancer Awareness Month is a reminder that prevention and treatment are not just about appointments and procedures. They are also about people—and nurses are often right there beside them.
